Alfred P. Vecchione of Natick, Harwich, and Hudson passed away peacefully on September 15th 2024 at the age of 90. Today we lost a gentle and loving soul. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Eleanor, Ellie (Bennett) with whom he shared 62 happy years. Loving father of Donna McHugo and James of Medway and Linda McGrath and Michael of Hudson. Adored grandfather of Colleen Lunter and Evan of Marlboro, Michael McHugo and Laura of Boston, Delaney McHugo of Los Angeles, Sarah McGrath of Washington DC, and Rachel McGrath of Millville, and his great grandchildren Delilah and Lillian Lunter. Survived by his brother Gerald Vecchione and wife Deanna of York, ME, and sister-in-law Nancy Vecchione of Londonderry, NH and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by his siblings Lena, Laura, Marguerite, Louise, Bessie, Mary, John, Danny, and Christine.
Al graduated from Newton North High School in 1953 and joined his brothers in the Vecchione Construction company. He was especially proud of the work they did building the Natick Elks. Al was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves National Guard. Al, Freddie to the family, was a loving husband and a wonderful father. He loved to be outside whether tending his garden or shoveling snow.
Al had a beautiful tenor voice and sang with the Framingham Choral Society at Tanglewood and Symphony Hall; later singing with the Gateway Guardsmen Barbershop Chorus where he served for a time as President. Later in life he joined the Worcester Men of Song. He and Ellie made lifelong friends with members of the Barbershop community and enjoyed traveling to Barbershop Competitions which provided them much laughter, singing and joy.
After working for many years as a draftsman for Raytheon and Charles T. Main. He retired from General Dynamics Electric Boat Groton, CT where he was proud of his work on the SeaWolf Class Submarine. After retirement he joined Adessa Corp and enjoyed his time driving in and out of Boston to pick up auction clients.
Later, he and Ellie moved to their home in Harwich where they enjoyed sunning at Red River Beach, trips to the library, and family visits. Al was a true gentleman, known for his sparkling eyes, and always having his handkerchief at the ready.
We wish to thank all the caregivers who helped Al, especially the Connections staff at the Artisan Hudson. A Funeral Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 10 am, at Saint Michael Catholic Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson, MA. Luncheon will follow the service.
