Carolyn M. (O'Neil) Pope

July 27, 1934 — December 30, 2019

Brookfield

Carolyn M. (O'Neil) Pope, age 85, returned to her heavenly home on  Monday, December 30, 2019 after a valiant battle with a long illness.  Her last days were surrounded by her family and her three grandsons which she so cherished.  Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Sweeney, and her husband Robert; her three grandsons, Collin, Owen, and Daniel Sweeney of Oakham; her brother, David O'Neil of Hudson;  her sister-in-law, Nancy McDonald of Hudson, her nieces, Ellen O'Neil of Boston and Marykate McDonald of Worcester, her nephews, Matthew O'Neil of Hudson and Shawn McDonald of Maine; her cousins, Barbara Pascoe of Cary, North Carolina and Robert Johnson of Sanford, North Carolina, and her lifelong friend, Carol (McGorty) Dudley, of Stow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Pope, and her son, Stephen Pope.

Born in Hudson, she was the daughter of John and Florence (Keefe) O'Neil.

Carolyn graduated from St. Michael's Academy class of 1951, and Framingham State Teacher College class of 1955.  She taught Home Economics at Bellingham High School, Hudson High School, and Marlboro High School, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of St. Michael School Committee, the Emblem Club, and Catholic Daughters of America.

An avid reader and history buff, Carolyn was the curator of the Hudson Historical Society for seven years and president for 2 years.  Upon moving to Brookfield in 2003, she was elected to the Board of Directors of Wagon Wheel Co-op Mobile Home Park and served as vice president for two years.

Carolyn loved spending time with her three grandsons and was a loyal and enthusiastic fan attending the boys' track, basketball, baseball, and football events.  Carolyn relished traveling and visited many places both abroad and home.  In her spare time, Carolyn would spend hours gardening and completing her many puzzle books.  Carolyn was a devoted animal lover and so enjoyed her many cats and dogs, especially her cat, Riley.

She is dearly missed by her loved ones who celebrate the fact that she is now at peace with her Creator.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Carolyn M. Pope to  Second Chance Animal Shelter.
