Charles Edward Garnett, 87, of Hudson, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester. He is survived by his wife of sixty six years; Alice M. (Bruen) Garnett. Born in Jamestown, NY, he was the son of the late Charles and Margaret (Carter) Garnett. He resided in Hudson for many years and later resided in Orleans on Cape Cod before moving to Worcester three years ago.
Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter; Janet Cellucci and her husband, Paul Cellucci, former Governor of Massachusettes and Ambassador to Canada of Hudson, MA. He is also survived by his sister; Gladys Orr of Colorado Springs, CO, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was the father of the late Ronald E. Garnett who died in 1997.
He graduated from Bentley College in 1950. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army as a Second Lt. He owned and operated the Hudson Combing Co. in Hudson, MA, and its subsidiary, Brady Combing Co. of Brady, TX, for many years specializing in the fibers of an angora goat's fleece. Mohair is a luxury fiber, mostly used in outerwear apparel and the coarse grades in upholstery. It has superior dyeing qualities and a softer texture than wool. Starting in 1958 and through 1979, Hudson Combing Co. and Brady Combing Co. were the leading processors of mohair in the country. He was a member of the Hudson Charter Committee, a Scout Leader for many years receiving the Silver Beaver Award for Leadership, and was a Trustee for twenty four years to the Hudson Public Library, serving as Chairman for seventeen of those years. He also served as Vestry of the Saint Luke's Church in Hudson.
A memorial service will be celebrated Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in Saint Luke's Church, Wood Square, Hudson, MA. There are no calling hours.
