Retired Army Col. Steadman P. Nelson, 94, of Hudson, died on Sunday, Aug. 11th surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 6 years, Dorothy H. (O'Donnell) Nelson of Hudson.
Col. Nelson was born and raised in Viborg, South Dakota, son of the late Andy and Ethel (Steadman) Nelson. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until retiring in 1965. During his long career with the military, Col. Nelson served as an Administrator for several Army Bases including Fort Devens here in Massachusetts. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 193 in Dundalk, MD and member of the Boumi Temple Shriners in Baltimore, MD. Besides his long military career with the U.S. Army, Col. Nelson had a passion for vintage automobiles and was the proud owner of the classic 1952 Kaiser Manhattan.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his two children, Andrea Levin and her husband Kenneth of Newtonville, MA and Robert Nelson and his wife Helene of Calais, France. He is also survived by four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; his nephew William Martens and his wife Eunice of Yuma, AZ, along with his several other nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Rowena Martens and Fern Ormsby.
A funeral service and celebration of Col. Nelson's life will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the First Federated Church, 200 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14th from 9:00 to10:45 a.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749 prior to the service.
