Currie Barss

d. February 27, 2008

Currie Barss, 87, of Bolton, died peacefully from age-related complications Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at Sterling Healthcare Center where she has resided for the past two and a half years.
Born in Boston, she was the eldest daughter of Richard S. and Elinor J. (Johnston) McCabe. She was raised in Lexington and attended the Child Walker Art School in Boston, majoring in theatrical design. She was married to artist, William Barss, for thirty-seven years. They both worked with artist Peter Hunt in Provincetown, later moving to Acton and then Bolton, where she resided for over fifty years.
Mrs. Barss was an avid gardener, having many delightful gardens at her residence on Harvard Road. She enjoyed sharing "garden talk" with anyone who came by and she enjoyed trading plants with other gardeners. She was a writer who had articles published in Redbook and Yankee Magazine. She also enjoyed reading and worked at the town library in Bolton for twenty years. She enjoyed hiking in the woods and was always ready for an adventure. The family spent summers living on an island with no running water or electricity off the south shore of Nova Scotia for many years. There she developed many lasting friendships. She loved to travel, going to Wales, England and Brazil.
In her later years, she enjoyed sharing stories of her summers spent in Provincetown with her cousin, Arch Johnston, whom she thought of as a brother, and of growing up during the depression.
She leaves her children, Peter Barss and his wife, Myra, of West Dublin, Nova Scotia, Taiya Barss and her husband, Tom Sawyer, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Christopher Barss of the Templeton Developmental Facility in Baldwinville, Sara Barss and her husband, Tom Early, of Lancaster, and Andrew Barss and his wife, Janet Nicol, of Tucson, Arizona. She had seven grand children and five great-grand children. She also leaves her only sister, Marcia Ryan, of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
