Davis R. Bates Jr., 83, of Berlin, formerly of Sudbury, passed away on Friday, Jan. 2nd at UMASS Memorial Medical Center, University Campus in Worcester surrounded by his family. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of 60 years, Nancy Jane Allen Bates of Berlin.
Davis was born in Boston, son of the late Davis R. Bates Sr. and G. Marion (Balcom) Bates. He was raised in Braintree where he attended local schools and was a 1948 graduate of Braintree High School. The following year he completed postgraduate work at Thayer Academy. Davis went on to receive his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University. He resided in Sudbury for 43 years prior to moving to Berlin in 2004.
Upon graduation Davis worked at Sperry Rand, Long Island, New York where he held several patents. He was later drafted and served in the military as a First Lieutenant at the Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville Alabama. Upon his honorable discharge with good conduct from the Army Ordnance Division he joined General Electric as the Guidance Engineering Program Manager from 1959 - 1963. Davis then joined Raytheon as the Federal Ballistic Missile Marketing Director where he was well-published and obtained Fellow and Officer status from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics organization. In his later years he served as lead partner and consultant of DBates & Associates with clients of Lockheed, Boeing, NASA, as well as, serving on the Board of Directors for NAVSYS Corporation.
In addition to his wife Nancy, he is survived by his four children, Davis R. Bates III of Shelburne Falls, MA, Richard A. Bates of Leyden MA, Steven W. Bates and wife Donna of Westford, MA and Nancy B. Keene and husband Robert of Hudson, MA. He will be remembered by his 7 loving grandchildren, Haley, Zack, Shaun, Will, John, Bethany, Nolka and his adoring great grandson Holden.
A memorial service and celebration of Davis' life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17th at 1:00 p.m. in the Westgate Church, 100 Winter Street, Weston, MA. Committal services will be held privately at a later date.
