Doris J. Rosen

Doris J. Rosen, 90, of Hudson, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2017 after a brief illness. Her son Wesley Rosen Jr., her granddaughter Kimberly Calvao, and Doris’ therapy dog Abe were in her presence in the last moments of her life.

She is survived by her son Wesley Rosen Jr. of Medford, her daughter Marlene Calvao of Northborough, her granddaughter Kimberly Calvao and partner Marco Pini of Lynn, and her granddaughter Christina Medeiros and husband Roberto Medeiros and their three sons of Northborough. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years Wesley Rosen Sr., and her sisters Margeret Phelps of Texas and Elizabeth Martinez of Satellite Beach FL.

Doris’ life was always filled with and defined by music. She started out singing in the choir of her childhood church. She then married her husband of 49 years, Wes Sr., who was a professional vaudeville drummer. After starting a family, Wes Sr. decided to give up playing gigs at different places every night and settled into a steadier job playing nightly dinner music on the organ and piano at Morrison’s Imperial House, a fine dining restaurant in Winter Park Florida. As their children grew older, Wes Sr. decided to return to playing gigs again. He taught Doris to play the drums, guitar, and vibraphone and they formed the Melody Monarchs duo. Doris sang and they both played music for dancing at various clubs in Florida. Returning to New England, they changed the their name to the Dori Wells Duo and played dance music at the Rotor Club in Ayer, the Bull Run in Shirley, the Amvets in Fitchburg, and Siama Park in Fitchburg. One of the highlights of their career was when they cut an album titled “For the good times” which was locally very successful. It seemed like her music would end when Wes Sr. passed away, but Wes Jr. bought her a karaoke machine and she was able to continue singing and entertaining at many nursing homes in the area.

Other than music, her greatest passion was for the Boston Red Sox. She regretted that Wes Sr. passed away before they won the World Series of ’03, 07’, and ’13, but she remained a steadfast fan for her entire life. She even stayed up until 3 AM for the record setting 18-inning game that was played last season.

She was an avid seamstress and made clothing and flags for all of her friends, delivered meals on wheels to other seniors, and joined the choir at the First United Methodist Church in Hudson. She always enjoyed cruising around town in Wes Jr’s red Thunderbird and she loved all the members of the New England Thunderbird car club and was always eager to see them when she could.

Her engaging style of being able to communicate with, relate to, and love a great diversity of many people will be missed by everyone.

In recent years she was most appreciative of Dr. Michele Goh of Hudson and her staff for helping her to maintain her independence at home and for their kind and caring manner.

Her most famous quote in the past few years was “Lord. I’m not afraid of dying. Just not today because I haven’t made my bed yet”.

Calling hours are from 4PM to 7PM on Thursday December 14, 2017 at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home , 50 Central St, Hudson, Ma. The funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 34 Felton St, Hudson, Ma. at 10 AM on Friday December 15, 2017. Following the service, burial will be at the Westlawn Cemetery in Littleton, Ma.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave, Salem, Ma 01970 (northeastanimalshelter.org) where her therapy dog Abe was rescued three years ago.
