Ellen E. (Turberg) Shaw, 96, of Hudson, MA, died on Monday, April 14th, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at Beaumont at The Willows in Westborough, MA. She was the beloved wife of 54 years to the late Rev. Paul M. Shaw who died in 2004.
Ellen was born and raised in Port Washington, NY, daughter of the late Paul Turberg and Ellen (Halpin) Turberg. She attended local schools and was a 1946 graduate of Port Washington High School. Ellen enjoyed raising her family and caring for their home but did spend tim as a Pre-School Kindergarten Teacher and “Lunch Mom”.
In May of 1948 Ellen was married to Paul, and they resided a short time in Lakeville, MA. They moved to Middleborough, MA, spending 20 memorable years there raising their family. During the last eight years of that time she served with her husband as the pastoral couple at the First Baptist Church in Dighton, MA. In 1973 they moved to Portland, ME and served the Saint Lawrence Congregational Church on Munjoy Hill for 7 years. Paul and Ellen then spent their time between Hope, ME and Clearwater, FL. After Paul died Ellen took up residence with her daughter Paula and husband Ron in Glenville, NY and has spent the past 9 years in Hudson when Paula and Ron relocated to Hudson, MA.
Ellen is survived by her 3 children, Paula E. Sylvester and her husband Ron of Hudson, MA, Mark R. Shaw and his wife Lois of Gloucester, VA and Claudia L. Harbaugh and her husband John of The Villages, FL. She also leaves her 8 grandchildren, Jayme Szymczak and her husband Todd of Hanover, MA, Nathan Sylvester and his wife Pauline of New York, NY., Ryan Sylvester of Templeton, MA., Lindsay Milne and her husband Brian of Westminster, MA., Anne White of Gloucester, VA., Jonathan Shaw and his wife Kate of Goma in the Republic of the Congo, Courtney Holtz of Fairport, NY., Megan Pearce and her husband Daniel of Essex Junction, VT. Also 14 great grandchildren Reilly, Peyton, Graham, Connor, Callighan, Carter, Elliot, Elijah, Rowan, Will, Evan, Noah. Noa Sophia and Flora along with her many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends at Beaumont. She was predeceased by her 5 siblings, Joseph, Paul and George Turberg, Grace Pearce and Ruth Long.
Ellen had many interests in her life besides her church and faith. She was an avid reader and in her spare time enjoyed scrabble and crossword puzzles. She was an accomplished artist and always shared her works with family and friends. Her family and friends always appreciated her gift of music and talent as a singer. She sang at church and was a member of the vocal trio in Middleborough. She cherished every moment she spent with family, especially later with the grandchildren and great grandchildren. She lived a long life and leaves a legacy of love and guidance for her family to cherish forever.
Family and friends may gather to remember Ellen on Monday, May 12th, 2025 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm prior to a Service and Celebration of Ellen’s Life at 2:00 p, at the Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home, 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA. Committal services will be held privately in East Union Cemetery, Union, ME at a later date.
