George C. Dargaty

d. February 2, 2007

STOW, MA - George C. Dargaty, 85, of Stow and formerly Woonsocket, R.I. and Bridgeport, CT, died Friday, February 2 at Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton, Massachusetts, where he briefly resided after suffering complications brought on by declining health. His wife of sixty years, Helene (Sabo), also 85, currently lives at the Center.
Born in Woonsocket, Mr. Dargaty was the son of Constantine and Doxia Dargaty who immigrated to the United States from the Macedonian Romanian region along the border of Albania and Greece. George and his two younger sisters, Elizabeth (Bettie) Gallagher of St. Petersburg, FL and Olga Bush of Ghent, NY, spent the early years of their lives in Bridgeport before he moved on to settle in Stow, living along the shore of the town's Lake Boon with Helene and their son, Zane, now residing in Danbury, CT.
During WWII, Dargaty worked as a riveter, building the Corsair airplane. Despite his strong desire to join the military and repeated attempts to sign up, the government felt he best served his country doing this important work and answered him with deferments each time he tried to enlist. He went on to become an expert riveter and eventually worked for Sikorsky Aviation, earning praise for his work from Igor Sikorsky himself. He later began a long career with Raytheon, overseeing quality control at various company vendors all over the United States. Following his retirement from Raytheon, George and his wife traveled extensively until illness befell her in later years and he provided full care for her at their home.

At the same time, he developed many interests and excelled at them all, including black & white photography, watercolor painting, and writing. While pursuing these hobbies, he joined town organizations such as the Council on Aging and the Concerned Citizens of Stow and became a regular fixture at Town Meetings and a variety of town board and committee sessions. He was known for his insightful commentary and opinions about town politics and his undying enthusiasm for active involvement. He was an outspoken advocate for those in need, especially the elderly and the less fortunate, and urged all citizens to participate in town government and understand the importance of sound fiscal practices to ensure that Stow remains a home for people of all income levels.
His impact has been strong and far reaching within the town of Stow and was evident from the legions of friends, from all walks of life and all ages, who visited with him daily as his health declined. George will be greatly missed by his family which also includes grandson Zachary of Danbury, CT, granddaughter Doxia of Manhattan and great grandson Zander of Danbury.
Visiting Hours will be Wednesday, February 7 3pm - 7pm at Tighe Hamilton Funeral Home, 507 Central Street, Hudson. Ma. The Stow Council on Aging will also host their own time for remembrance of Mr. Dargaty on Thursday February 8, 11am - 2pm in the Friendship Room of Town Building on Great Road. There will be no public burial service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Stow Council on Aging, 380 Great Road Stow, MA 01775
