George Tom Fieldsend, 85, a life long resident of Hudson, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, Jan. 27th. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Margaret I. (Haslerud) Fieldsend of Hudson.
George was born in Clinton, son of the late Ralph and Ethel (Tull) Fieldsend. He was raised in Hudson where he attended local schools and was a 1943 graduate of Hudson High School. He was a member of the Hudson H.S. 1941 Midland League Football championship team and scored the winning touchdown in the traditional Thanksgiving day football game in 1941. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS McDougal from 1943 to 1946 when he was honorably discharged. He attended the Lowell Textile Institute in Lowell following the war and graduated in 1948. He married his high school sweetheart in 1950 and owned and operated the Hudson Combing Company of Hudson, a textile business he ran proudly for many years until his retirement in the 1970's. He was a member of the Hudson Boy Scouts, Troup 2, a life member of the Elks Lodge #959 of Hudson; member of the Wally Byam Airstream Club; National Wood Carvers Assoc. and was a member of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in Hudson.
George and Margaret enjoyed the "best time of their life" during retirement and traveled extensively in their Airstream Travel Trailer throughout the United States. His hobbies included golfing with his friends and wood carving.
Besides his wife Margaret, he is survived by his son, Tom H. Fieldsend and his wife Vondelle of Peaks Island, Maine; his brother, Arthur T. Fieldsend and sister-in-law, Ann Marie Coulson, both of Lydonville, Vermont; his three nieces, Thora Ann Dumont and her husband J. Edward of Wheelock, Vermont, Nancy Langelier and her husband Peter of Marlboro and Charlotte Menninger and her husband Florian of Northboro. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, John R. Fieldsend and his wife Molly of Columbia, Maryland, David T. Fieldsend and his wife Allegra of Lowell; his three great grandchildren Charles D. Fieldsend and Rosalind A. Fieldsend, both of Lowell, Ian George Fieldsend of Columbia, Maryland and several grand nieces and grand nephews.
Family and friends are invited to join George's family for a graveside service on Tuesday, Feb. 1st at 12:00 noon at the Forestvale Cemetery, Broad Street, Hudson. Immediately following the graveside service, the family encourages everyone to join them in a celebration of George's life, those who attend the service and those who may have not been able to attend the service from 1:00 to 4:00p.m. at the Marlborough Country Club, 200 Concord Road, Marlborough, MA 01752. In lieu of flowers, donations in George's memory may be made to: Perkins School for the Blind, Braille & Talking Book Library, 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
