George Edward McGee, Sr., 86, a longtime Hudson resident and local businessman, passed away peacefully, on Thursday, January 21, 2021, at Marlborough Hospital, after a period of declining health.
George was born in Marlborough, on August 9, 1934, a son of the late Clifton J. and Mary E. (Bassette) McGee. He graduated from Marlborough High School, where he played football and basketball. He moved to Hudson when he was 20, where he has resided for the past 66 years. George proudly served his Nation in the United States Army National Guard and subsequently worked for 16 years as a Master Gas Fitter for Commonwealth Gas. George’s entire life he always had an entrepreneurial spirit; owning and operating many successful businesses in and around Hudson.
George owned several speedshops, where he worked on Hot Rods in Hudson, Marlborough and Clinton. In 1966 George bought his first limousine and began a wild ride owning his and operating Continental Limousine for over 26 years until he retired in 1992. During his years as a chauffeur , George met and drove many world famous celebrities and politicians including Sammie Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Wayne Newton and Governor Endicott "Chub" Peabody, who he later worked for as a Governor's Aide. George also owned a school bus and disabled transportation company, Checker Cab Service,and the Chevron Gas Station on Cox Street in Hudson. He was also the owner of Cole’s Restaurant, Maggie’s Ice Cream stand, as well as 5 ice cream trucks. He was also one of the original investors of Hickey Dillon Funeral Home in Hudson.
Even with his many businesses, he still found time to serve his Nation again as a Commander for the Coast Guard Auxiliary in New Bedford and also his community as a Hudson town selectman for 18 years, serving 15 years as the chairman of the board. George was a well known and respected member of the Hudson community and will be dearly missed by his many friends and family members.
George is survived by his son, George Edward “Gig” McGee, Jr. of Florida, 2 grandsons, Montana McGee and Dylan McGee, both of Florida; his nieces, Julie Baudo and her husband John, Lauri Wierzbicki and her husband Mark, Shellie Ashbery and her husband Andy and Sherry Guenther and his goddaughter, DJ (Redding) Collins. He was also predeceased by his wife, Sandra A. (Johnson) McGee; his sister, Patricia Pazzanese and his goddaughter, Rachel Wierzbicki.
Services for George will be held at a later date.
