Harry A. Hewitt, 84, of Stow died peacefully, Sunday, January 11, at Marlborough Hospital with his family and caregiver at his bedside. He was the husband of Virgie M. (Badger) Hewitt who predeceased him in 2001. They had been married for 54 years at the time of her death.
Harry (Hunky to family and friends) was born in Hudson, son of the late Albert and Helen (Martin) Hewitt and was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 170. He was a lifetime member of the Hudson Elks and in his younger days was Chief of the Auxiliary Fire Department in Hudson.
Proud to be a trucker, he logged over a million miles "putting the pedal to the metal." As many know and have heard, he had about a million stories to tell about days behind the wheel. His love for driving didn't stop at the end of the work week. On weekends there were many spontaneous family outings, when he would drive the family to Bedford Airport to watch airplanes take off and land, drive to Mount Wachusett, drop in on family and friends, or go for a long ride to nowhere in particular.
When he wasn't driving, he could be found working on projects around the house, be it plumbing, construction or electrical wiring. He would also eagerly lend a hand to relatives and friends who were in need of help with their projects. So it was no surprise when after retiring from trucking, he worked at Kathryn Barton Nursing Home in Wayland as a maintenance supervisor.
He loved Cape Cod and helped Virgie's sister and brother-in-law build several cottages in Wellfleet in the 1950's and 60's. Wellfleet was the summer spot for many memorable family vacations where he enjoyed swimming, watching boats at the harbor, walking through Provincetown or climbing the dunes at Coast Guard Beach and Race Point.
Harry was a loving husband, father and friend to many. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Harry leaves his daughter Holly and her husband Guy Lacombe Jr. of Ashland; his daughter Wendy Hewitt and her partner John Ducat of Hudson; his caregiver Annie Mariano; his brothers, Lionel "Buddy" Hewitt of Connecticut, Richard Hewitt of Colorado, Robert Hewitt of South Carolina and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John Hewitt.
A funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central St. Hudson, MA 01749. Burial will follow in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 14 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
