Hazel "Louise" (Lynas) Champagne, 86, of Berlin, died Tuesday, Feb. 2nd at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Worcester. She was the wife of the late Joseph Romeo Champagne who died in 1984.
Born in Oklahoma City, OK, daughter of the late Walter C. and Hazel C. (Lillistrom) Lynas, Louise worked for various organizations part time from 1947 to 1984 including Honey Farms and Leominster Hospital. She lost her first husband of two years, Leland F. Oshier who was killed in action in 1945 while stationed in Okinawa, Japan during WWII. She has resided in Berlin after moving from Leominster in 1979 where she resided since 1954.
Louise was very active in her community, she was a member of the Berlin Council on Aging and was a CO-Founder and volunteer of the "Meals on Wheels" program for over 18 years. She was a member of the Central Mass Council on Aging and sat on the Advisory Board and the Board of Directors from 1986 to 1994. Louise was a recipient of many awards including the "Certificate of Appreciation" from the Central Mass Agency on Aging in 2000; the Berlin Council of Aging, "Legacy Award" in 2000 for her works with the Meals on Wheels Program along with several other awards presented over the years for her dedication to her community.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Geldart and her husband Douglas of Berlin and was predeceased by her daughter, Shirley Champagne, wife of Raymond Goguen of Hudson on Sunday, Jan. 31st. She is also survived by her sister, Lorraine Collins of Georgia; her four grandchildren, Christopher and Patricia Jeznach and Jennifer and Carrie Geldart along with several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late, Dorothy DeGeorge, (her twin sister), of Alabama, Walter C. Lynas Jr. of Minnesota and grandmother of the late Scott Geldart who died in 1982.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 8th at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Joseph's The Good Provider Church, 52 West Street, (RT. 62) Berlin. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Feb. 7th, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central St. Hudson, MA 01749.
