Herbert W. Busch, 72, of Hudson, died Friday, May 14th at UMASS Memorial Healthcare, Belmont Street, in Worcester. He leaves his wife of 47 years, Ellen R. (Burke) Busch of Hudson.
Herb was born in Boston and raised in Billerica, son of the late Herbert Busch and survived by his mother, Helen (Smith) Busch of Pleasant Valley, NY. He was a member of the last graduating class in 1955 at the former Howe High School in Billerica. He received a Bachelor's Degree from Boston College in 1959 and began his long teaching career at Hudson High in September of that year. He also received a Master's Degree from Framingham State College in 1965. Herb spent 39 years as a social studies teacher and many years as an assistant and head coach at Hudson High School in both football and track and retired from teaching at the high school in 1998. He most recently attended his 50th year reunion at Boston College and was proud to be awarded the "Golden Eagle". He was an active member and Trustee for the Hudson Historical Society, he was currently serving as an elected Park Commissioner, a post he has held for 33 years and was a member of the Hudson Historic District Commission. He most recently was officiating local track meets and a member of the Central Massachusetts Track & Field Officials Association. Herb was elected to the Hudson High School Athletic Hall of Fame, elected to the MIAA Hall of Fame as an assistant coach in football and member of the Billerica Memorial Alumni Association. He was also a member of the Hudson Elk's B.P.O.E. 959 and Saint Michael's Parish in Hudson.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by his two children, Carolyn Hawes and her husband Brian of Hudson and Kevin Busch and his wife Colleen of North Andover. He also leaves his sister, Joyce Lovejoy of Pleasant Valley, NY; his brother, Robert Busch and his wife Marie of Edgewater Park, NJ; his loving grandson, Bryce Hawes of Hudson and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 18th at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michael's Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson. Burial will follow in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 17th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the: Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749.
