Ira H. "Bunny" Munroe Jr., 85, of Thompson, CT, formerly of Marlboro, MA and Boylston, MA, died Tuesday, Oct. 23rd at UMASS Memorial Healthcare in Worcester, MA. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Clara (Tervo) Munroe of Thompson, CT.
Ira was born and raised in Marlboro, son of the late Ira H. Munroe, Sr. and Blanche C. (Robert) Munroe. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII. Ira was presented with a plaque in recognition of his unwavering courage and dedication to the preservation of freedom during WWII from the Connecticut Secretary of State. In his early years, he owned and operated an 18-wheeler truck before becoming a diesel mechanic. Upon retirement he moved to Thompson, CT where he resided for the past 30 years.
Ira and his wife Clara had many hobbies together, they enjoyed camping trips with family and friends, going to NASCAR Racing, but most of all they enjoyed day trips on his Harley Davidson Motorcycle. Ira also enjoyed spending time at his summer home in Maine. They were accomplished and award winning square dancers, attending many dances and competitions they truly enjoyed. He will be fondly missed by all who knew him, especially his wife Clara, his children and his loving and cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Karen Mancinone and her husband Daniel of Bristol, CT, Katherine Schonberg of Grafton, MA, Carleen Pierce of Clinton, MA, Ira H. "Skip" Munroe III of Marlboro, MA, Susan Cobane and her husband George of Sutton, MA and Clara "Ellie" Munroe of Southbridge, MA. He was predeceased by his son, David Munroe. He is also survived by his sister, Roberta Temple of Marlboro; his 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his nephew and Godson, Clayton Temple of Marlboro, MA along with many other nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late Krista Schonberg.
The family wishes to thank all of the doctors, nurses and staff at the UMass 6th Floor ICU East for the loving care extended to Ira and his family.
A service and celebration of Ira's life will be held on Monday, Oct. 29th at 11:00 a.m. in the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749. Burial will follow in South Cemetery, Berlin, MA. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
