John T. Purdy -79, of Hudson, died Sunday, March 2, at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham.
Born and raised in Hudson, son of the late William C. and Laura J. (Dupont) Purdy, he attended Hudson schools and resided in Hudson all his life. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Purdy was a Hudson Firefighter, retiring in 1983 after 33 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the Hudson Eagle's, American Legion, Post 100 of Hudson,life member of the Hudson Lodge of Elks, Minuteman Model A Auto Club and the Hudson Historical Society. He was also a member of the Hudson Firefighter's Assoc. and International Assoc. of Firefighter's, AFL-CIO-CLC. His many hobbies included restoring antique cars and trucks, most notably, a 1936 Buffalo Pumper Fire Engine he assisted in restoring, which was in service during his time as a Hudson Firefighter, and completed in 2001. The 1936 Fire Engine which he enjoyed operating from time to time will honor him as an escort vehicle in his procession transporting the funeral flowers. He also enjoyed playing the drums in his band, "John T. Purdy Trio", fishing, boating and cherished the times he had with his family.
He is survived by his 3 daughters, Jeanne Snow of Marlboro, Janet Locke of Southboro, Joyce Tari of California; 2 sons, James F. Purdy of Hudson and Jay T. Purdy of Marlboro. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, his former wife, Lorraine (Burnap) Purdy of Marlboro, many nieces, nephews, cousins and the many friends who will always remember John as an outgoing, generous and well liked individual. He was the father of the late John W. Purdy and Jeffrey G. Purdy and brother of the late Alice Purdy and Marie McIntyre.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 7, at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michaels Church 21 Manning Street Hudson MA. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 6, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749.
