John Joseph (“Butch”) Ready, Jr., 79, of Marlborough, MA, formerly of Dorchester, MA, passed away at his home of nearly 50 years on July 19, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
John is survived by his children Jacqueline Ryan and her husband John Ryan, Jr., Matthew Ready, and Christopher Ready and his fiancé Chrystal Anderson. He is predeceased by his loving wife Janet, whom he missed every day since her passing, his son John J. Ready III, his sister Kathleen Reynolds and her husband George Reynolds, his brother Kevin Ready and his wife Margie Ready, and his sister Patricia Wood and her husband Tom Wood.
John was born on July 17, 1945, in New York. He was the son of the late Helen Harvey White and John J. Ready. He was raised in Dorchester, and he spoke often about his days spent with his Nana, his aunts and uncles, as well as multiple cousins and many close friends, whom he considered to be his family.
John enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 18. He valued his service highly, and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer through his 25 years of service. He received multiple commendations and letters of appreciation throughout his Naval career while serving on the USS Brister. John was a hard worker. He worked for the City of Boston, UMass, and Framingham State College, where he retired from. He worked in many roles - boiler engineer, grounds supervisor, and ran the store room.
John enjoyed traveling with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Family summers were spent in the White Mountains, as well as at the ocean. You could often catch him in the arcades playing his shooting and driving games. In the winter, he enjoyed trips to Walt Disney World, road trips with his wife to Florida and Virginia. As long as he was driving, he was happy. His famous saying was “I would drive to Maine for a cup of coffee.
John’s grandchildren, Cody, Austin, Hailey, Alex and Jennifer, would always put a smile on his face, and there wasn’t anything he would not do for them - after school rides, Burger King runs, ice cream, trips to Battleship Cove, and vacations at Disney World. While at Disney world, there was always a stop at the Hall of Presidents, so his grandchildren could learn about their country.
John enjoyed spending time with his nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. He talked often of them, and enjoyed family gatherings, trips to the beach, and family cookouts.
