Jose M. M. Chaves

Jose M.M. Chaves, 86, of Portsmouth, RI, former long time resident of Hudson, MA, died on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. He was the beloved husband of 58 years to the late Zulmira F. Chaves who died in August of 2022.Jose leaves his two sons, Jose M. Chaves and his wife Lucia of Hudson, MA, John F. Chaves and his wife Aida of Hudson, MA; his 3 brothers, Herculano M. Chaves of Portsmouth, RI, Antonio M. Chaves and his spouse Helena of Hudson, MA, Alberto M. Chaves and his spouse Filomena of Hudson, MA; his 4 grandchildren, Jeffrey Chaves and his girlfriend Tiffany Frias, Alicia Chaves and her boyfriend Jose Davalos, Adam and Emily Chaves; great granddaughter Ayla Chaves and great grandson Mateo Jose Davalos; step-great-grandchildren Jordan and Aubrey; along with many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Jose A. Chaves and 2 sisters, Maria de Conceicao Monteiro and Filomena Casavecchia.

Jose was born and raised in Santa Maria, Azores of Portugal, son of the late Jose M. and Filomena M. (Monteiro) Chaves. He emigrated to the United States in 1963 settling in Hudson, MA. Jose was employed by New England Tape Company of Hudson as a delivery driver. Following retirement, Jose and Zulmira moved to Portsmouth, RI spending the past 24 years near the ocean. He was a member of Saint Michael Parish in Hudson.

Jose enjoyed the outdoors tending to his gardens and his constant manicuring of his lawn. His passion for fishing and the ocean was a big part of his life. Launching his boat near his Portsmouth home for a day of fishing and fun with his family and friends was always special to him. He cherished the many gatherings with family, and especially his wife Zulmira's cooking! He will certainly be missed but never forgotten by those who loved and knew him.

Relatives and friends are invited to a period of visitation from 4-7pm on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at Saint Michael Parish, 21 Manning St., Hudson, MA; followed by a procession to Saint Michael Cemetery in Hudson for Committal Services.
