Mark Schulthess, age 75, formerly of Cheshire, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2024, at his home in Hudson, Massachusetts after bravely battling a long illness. He was born in Leominster, Massachusetts on June 5, 1949, to the late John Henry and Lillian (Grieshammer) Schulthess.
Mark was the beloved husband of Nannette (Taub) Schulthess and a devoted father to his three children: Meredith Szczepanski and her husband Dan of Brookline, NH; Allyson Wilson and her husband Bryan of Shrewsbury, MA; and Scott Schulthess and his wife Sheilagh of Chelmsford, MA. He is also survived by his loving brother Stephen Schulthess and his wife Betsy of Exeter, NH, and cherished grandchildren Isabella and Mikayla Szczepanski; Sophie, Chase, and Reid Wilson; and Catherine Schulthess. Mark is preceded in death by his brother John Schulthess III of Springfield, MA, who passed in 2012.
Mark graduated from Enfield High School in 1967 and then attended the University of Hartford. He enlisted in the Army in 1968 and did a tour in Vietnam as a Military Police Dog Handler. Mark resumed his military service in 1982 and proudly served his country for 36 years in both the Army Reserve and Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Brigadier General.
Mark received his associate's degree from Manchester Community College and later attended The George Washington University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Physician Assistant Degree in 1978. He was then accepted into The Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Emergency Medicine Residency Program in 1980, where he successfully completed his residency and subsequently served as Program Director for one year. Mark later returned to Connecticut with his family and worked at Griffin Hospital in the Emergency Department, where he was instrumental in starting the second all-volunteer Paramedic Program in the state. His career spanned 40 years as a medical provider, during which he earned his Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska in 2011.
Mark enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, using his many talents and hobbies to teach his grandchildren a variety of skills including emergency medicine, fishing, treehouse construction, caroling, hiking, and many others. He also enjoyed spending time with his veteran group at WestRidge and volunteering to assist veterans in his community of Hudson. Mark had a passion for his family genealogy and had the amazing opportunity to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Schulthess family with a trip to Zurich, Switzerland in 2016, where he attended a family gala at the Zunfthaus zur Meisen.
Donations in Mark’s name can be given to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute & the Jimmy Fund.
