Mary J. (Murphy) O'Malley, 71, of 48 Lakeside Ave., Hudson died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on January 24. She was the daughter of the late D. Francis and Mary R. (Bradshaw) Murphy, the husband of Robert F. O'Malley, and the mother of Robert F. (Frank) O'Malley, Jr of Hudson.
Mrs. O'Malley was an educator. A graduate of Emmanuel College, Mrs. O'Malley began her career as a sixth grade teacher at the former Packard St. School. She later taught mathematics at the former JFK Middle School and at Hudson High School. After obtaining advanced degrees in psychology and counseling, Mrs. O'Malley worked as a guidance counselor at the Farley School and later as the district-wide School Psychologist for the Hudson Public Schools.
With a love of students, especially those experiencing academic difficulties, and a keen interest in all things mathematical, Mrs. O'Malley spent many volunteer hours tutoring students in math. She also organized an after school math tutoring program for elementary students. For many years she helped organize the Special Olympics games in Hudson and assisted as a coach for practices. Mrs. O'Malley was a lifelong member of St. Michael Parish. She was a member of the St. Michael choir and volunteered with other parish members at Our Father's Table.
In addition to her husband and son, she leaves her daughter-in-law, Allyson O'Malley of Hudson, and three grandchildren upon whom she doted: Lauren, Timothy, and Daniel O'Malley. She is also survived by her brother, Dennis F. Murphy and his wife Julie of Harvard, her sisters, Catherine and her husband Robert Sanford of Berlin, Jane Van Buskirk of Houston, TX, Cornelia Murphy of Berlin, and Patricia and her husband Arthur Bergeron of Marlboro. Mrs. O'Malley also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews and devoted friends, including longtime family friend, Marjorie A. Vallier of Hudson.
Calling hours at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson, will be on Wednesday, Jan. 29th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson on Thursday, Jan. 30th at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Hudson.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sunshine Programs in care of The Hudson Recreation Department, 78 Main St., Hudson, MA 01749.
