Hudson, MA
Nancy Pollock Gillis of Hudson, age 92, died at her home following a brief illness on Saturday, Feb. 13th. She was born April 20, 1917 in Dallas, TX, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Hamilton) Pollock. She was predeceased by her husband John.
She was schooled in Illinois and California and attended Stanford University. After WWII she and John moved to Maine where they were registered tree farmers marking the beginning of her dedication to the protection of the environment for future generations. They moved to Hudson in 1962.
Her career as a volunteer began during WWII when she volunteered as a nurse's aide in civilian hospitals. She served as a teacher's aide in Hudson Public Schools and as a volunteer in the office of Hudson Arts Alliance and the Hudson Public Library, was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Cadet Girl Scout Leader. She was a volunteer driver for FISH and modeled in many benefit fashion shows. She volunteered at Marlboro Hospital for many years and is a life member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She served on the Hudson Conservation Commission for 22 years and was honored for the service at a town meeting in 1994. She was also the anonymous donor who made it possible for the Town of Hudson to purchase the Danforth property.
She was the first lay women Eucharistic Minister at St. Michael's Parish in Hudson and in 2000 the parish honored her for her services there. She and her husband were active in the Marriage Encounter Movement. Memberships have included St. John Eudes, Catholic Daughters of America, Organization of Assabet River (OAR), Hudson Women's Club, Hudson Historical Society, and Hudson Garden Club where she was a charter member, life member, past president and long-time conservation chairman. She is a life member of the Massachusetts Federation of Garden Clubs, Sudbury Valley Trustees and Loon Echo Land Trust in Maine.
She is survived by eight of her nine children: Virginia Gillis of Los Angeles, CA, Joan Gillis of Manchester, NH, Martha Gillis of Springfield, VA, Theresa Gillis of New York City, NY, Mary Bradshaw of Steilacoom, WA, Michael Gillis of Duxbury, MA, Sarah Schinis of Ansonia, CT and Hugh Gillis of Quito, Ecuador. Catherine Gillis of Framingham, MA died in 1994. She has 15 living grandchildren (Brian Bradshaw was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009.) and 9 Great Grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 16th at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michael's Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours will be held on Monday, Feb. 15th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central St. Hudson, MA 01749.
