Robert J. "John" Newton, 74, of Berlin, died peacefully with his family by his side at MetroWest Medical Center/Framingham Union Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 21st. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judith (Allsobrooks) Newton of Berlin.
John was born and raised in Marlborough, son of the late Raymond and Mary (Gomes) Newton. He served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War until being honorably discharged. John was employed for many with the Massachusetts Laborers' Union and has resided in Berlin for the past 39 years.
John truly enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. He looked forward to his frequent trips with his wife Judie to their log cabin which he built in Sweden, ME where they took many off road adventures on their ATV and spent time canoeing. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Dana J. Carpenter of Wake Forest, NC, Denise L. Parker of Boylston; his step-children, Robert S. Slattery of Sweden, ME and Johnson City, TN, Timothy W. Slattery of Westford, Tracey L. Holden of Conway, NH; his loving grandchildren, Emma Parker, Chloe and Sophia Carpenter, Erica Holden, Joseph, Nathanael, Timothy and Peter Slattery and was predeceased by two grandchildren, Andrew Slattery in 2005 and Kaitlyn Parker in 1995. He leaves his sister, Phyllis Dinges of Corpus Christi, TX; his two brothers, Edward J. Newton of Yuma, AZ, William Newton of Ossipee, NH; his many nieces and nephews and he was the brother of the late Mildred Cook and Harold R. Newton.
Family and friends may attend calling hours on Monday, Feb. 25th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749 followed by a service and celebration of John's life on Monday, Feb. 25th at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial services will be held in Maine at a later date.
