William M. Sherman-84, of Berlin, MA, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at the Knollwood Nursing Center of West Boylston, MA.
He was the husband of the late Catherine Anne (McDonough) Sherman who died in 1982.
Born in Marlboro, MA, and moved to Berlin, MA. with his mother and grandmother as the result of the death of his father; the late William H. Sherman who died during WWI and was the son of the late Suzanne (Maxfield) Sherman.
William attended Clinton High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940. He was stationed at the Schofield Barracks, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the USS New Orleans. His ship was moored in Pearl Harbor the morning of Dec. 7, 1941 for engine repairs when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor began. He later was involved in many of the naval campaigns in the Pacific. William was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Bay Patriots Capter and served as its Treasurer for many years. He worked for the Smith Valve Corp. of Westboro as a machinist until his retirement.
He is survived by his six children; William M. Sherman of Schertz, TX, Thomas M. Sherman of Goshen, NH, Jane E. Sherman Bagley of Lexington, KY, Kathleen A. Sherman Farnsworth of Bolton, MA, Michael Sherman of Framingham, MA, and Paul M. Sherman of Lancaster, MA. He also leaves his thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Nelson Turner Sherman.
A graveside service will be held Friday, June 16, 2006 in Maplewood Cemetery, Pleasant Street, Marlboro, MA at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Jones presiding. Calling hours will be Thursday, June 15, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749
