William J. Shumski, 88, a life long resident of Hudson, died on Wednesday, July 27th with his loving family at his side at UMASS Memorial Healthcare, Belmont Street Campus in Worcester. He leaves his wife of 67 years, Julia R. (Shusta) Shumski of Hudson.
William was born and raised in Hudson, son of the late William and Rose A. (Grinkwitch) Shumski. He attended local schools and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army as an ambulance driver with the 430th Motor Ambulance Company during the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe Campaigns. He was employed by General Motors in Framingham for 30 years until his retirement in 1985.
William enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Saint Michael's Bowling League for many years. He looked forward to his weekly billiards matches with friends on Wednesday evenings and especially enjoyed a good game of baseball throw and catch with his grandchildren. He was a member of the General Motors Auto Workers Union and member of Saint Michael's Parish in Hudson.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his four children, Carol Bauld and her husband John of Holliston, Michael Shumski of Wareham, Mary Ann Durant and her husband Joseph of Hudson, Catherine Maslowski and her husband Paul of Boylston and was predeceased by his son, Charles Shumski in 1982. He is also survived by his brother, John Shumski of Florida; 10 grandchildren, Sarah Prince of Marlboro, Andrew Bauld of Watertown, Kelli Shumski of Worcester, Wendi Hamilton of Auburn, Christopher Shumski of Worcester, Emily and Joey Durant of Hudson, Meghan, Matthew and Melissa Maslowski of Boylston and two great grandchildren, Taylor Prince and Marcus Hamilton.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Aug. 1st at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michael's Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Hudson. There are no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of: Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749.
